Using Rules to Manage Content

There are many web pages out there, and not all are useful or appropriate to your target audience. Rules-based administration helps control the quality of information in your index file.

The Fluid Dynamics Search Engine provides the following tools to manage content:

You may forbid your anonymous visitors from adding their own URL's. Most "garbage" submissions come from visitors.

If visitors are allowed to add, you can require that all their additions be approved by you first.

For all pages - submitted by visitors and administrators - you can search for certain strings in the hostname, URL, or document. Based on these searches, you can deny the document, allow it, or save it for administrator review and approval later. See the Filter Rules section.

You can parse the pages for tags that describe their level of adult-oriented content, and take action based on the level found. See the PICS section.

Filtering based on the Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS)

Looking for PICS tags is a helpful tool in filtering out adult content, because many adult sites have voluntarily tagged their content. It is not foolproof, since spammers can easily remove their PICS tags to be allowed in.

There are many PICS-related options. Use a checkbox to enable one of the implementations, and the options will be displayed.
